Where to stay: The Roosevelt New Orleans (123 Baronne Street; 504-648-1200; therooseveltneworleans.com), off Canal Street, was bought by the Waldorf Astoria Collection after Hurricane Katrina and reopened in July after a $145 million restoration. The grand chandeliered and columned lobby is a throwback to the turn of the century, when it first opened. All 504 rooms have been refurbished; rates start at $199 a night and run up to $4,000. On the other side of the French Quarter, the Maison Dupuy (1001 Toulouse Street; 504-586-8000; maisondupuy.com) features a quiet inner courtyard with a fountain and pool, (rates for a standard room range from $79 a night to $289 a night). The Lafayette Hotel (600 St. Charles Avenue; 504-524-4441; neworleansfinehotels.com) in the Central Business District offers large rooms and low rates (rooms with king-size beds start at $109, suites begin at $169), but the amenities can leave a little to be desired—the towels were dingy and the beds were old.
