Where to watch the Fourth of July fireworks in New Orleans

June 30 2014 | Holidays

New Orleans is a great city to be in to watch fireworks on the Fourth of July, and the French Quarter is a great neighborhood to watch them from. Every year, thousands of locals and visitors gather to watch the show, shop, eat and celebrate together.

What makes our city’s fireworks show so unique is that they are shot from “dueling barges” on the Mississippi River.  Think of dueling pianos, but as boats with fireworks instead! Basically, two barges shoot fireworks simultaneously from the river, creating a show that’s unlike any other you’ve ever seen.  Many people even bring their radios and tune into WWL 870 AM or Magic 101.9 FM to listen to the patriotic music that’s synced to the show every year.  You can also live stream the music from!

If you want to watch the fireworks from the French Quarter, Woldenberg Park (between Governor Nicholls Street Wharf and the Spanish Plaza) offers a great view. If you’re feeling adventurous and want to set up a great picnic, then catch the Canal Street Ferry over to Algiers Point. You can set up a blanket, chairs, food and drinks there, and watch the fireworks with New Orleans serving as a beautiful backdrop.

Besides watching fireworks, the French Quarter is a great place to be on July 4 for many reasons. For starters, there will be a lot of great shopping.  Many of the shops and boutiques offer Fourth of July discounts, which is great for bargain hunters.  Then, some of the city’s best attractions are offering discounted admission.  For example, from July 3-6 you can get $4 off any single ticket (adult or child) to The Aquarium of the Americas or The Audubon Insectarium.

To our guests staying with us this weekend – we can’t wait to share this fun holiday with you!  Be sure to stop by and chat with Sarah, our concierge.  She can help you plan where to eat, what to see, and give you directions to the fireworks.  And when it gets too hot outside, you can always take a dip in the pool, relax in your air conditioned room, and grab a cold drink at the bar.
